Monologue

I grew up in Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. In my high school, I was inspired about Computer Science by my cousin, who is a game engine expert. I decided to give it a shot and took the entrance exam for Hanoi university of Science and Technology (Đại học Bách Khoa Hà Nội). It was an amazing time to study at this great tradition, an age-old university with top lectures and smart students in Computer Science. I had my very first professional job as a Machine Learning Engineer at Apvera in 2017. It was a small startup with 5 engineering guys. Soon I realized without a data pipeline, you can’t solve any machine learning problems. I learnt and applied Lambda architecture which was first introduced by Nathan Marz. The goal was to build fast and resilient as much as possible, so I learned from Near real-time consumers by Spark streaming, Batch layer by Spark SQL and MemSQL, Visualization by superset. It was fun to take advantage of all these new technologies. In late 2017, I joined Beeketing (OCG now after rebranding). Beeketing was a young start-up with a smart CEO and of course, they had impressive visions about building products and delivering to the world, which meant lots of users, even and especially the pickiest customers. Beeketing is an internet company, subscription business model and the target user was online small-and-medium business (SMB). One of the products I had been following from the very first days is Boost Sales (link), whose purpose is to encourage end-customers to buy more than one product in a session. This app suggests target upsells: When visitors add an item to cart, a popup showing a list with better options that they might be interested in as well as product bundling will appear to upsell them after checkout suggestions. It was the most successful product which made its way to the top of high-earning apps for months . While working on this app, I learnt to solve difficult problems, using both machine learning and computer science skills to meet product requirements: how to deal with cold-start, how to serve users in API, how to handle ML pipeline without breaking business model,... In the middle of 2020, I joined One Mount Group, one of the top companies in Vietnam, which has a mission to build a digital ecosystem, take advantage of technologies and improve traditional business models. We know this is ambitious and will only pay off in the long run. I am currently working as a Data Scientist who focuses on how to personalize user experience on One Mount ecosystem: from VinID, One Housing to Vinshop products.
